Spartacus, 1960 Kirk Douglas Laurence Olivier, Tony Curtis, Stanley Kubrick

Image
First it should be noted that the first scene in this film was directed by Antony Mann set in the quarry and there after it’s directed by Kubrick at the insistence of Kirk Douglas who had Mann sacked.  Stanley Kubrick disowned this film and refused to have it as part of his canon. I think this is because he came to the project late and Kubrick’s nature is to plan a project from its inception and compile detailed research before loading a camera with film.  I first watched this film when I was 9 or 10 years old, I think it might have been over an Easter weekend I sat and I was fascinated.  The story  Spartacus is a slave and rebels against his owners who force him into hard labour at a quarry, one rebellion goes to far and he is slated to be executed but before this happens he is sold to a Gladiator school. There he trains as a gladiator and falls in love with another slave called Varinia. A rich Roman comes and pays for two fights to the death Spartacus is cho...

Plastic ducks at work ?

Image
A social experiment or just a random act ! I’m just not sure which. It was Sunday morning at work and on our machines and monitors an army of miniature ducks appeared. Some of them singular and other times in pairs they were spread throughout the room (Large room ), slowly they were noticed and they initiated social interactions. People would had them as gifts to another some times as a little joke or as a token of affection. A lot of them lasted the day with only a few being selected as a keepsake.  The next day the rest were slowly taken some people after 24 hours of thinking saw how cute they were and wanted an army of them. Others were content only to have one. It’s strange the way people looked at this tiny Inexpensive piece of plastic. I overheard some people today, “Oh where is yours?” Asked one “I left him at home I want to keep him safe” replied the other, “I’m really taking care of mine too, I don’t want to loose him. I think I’ll leave mine at home to tomorrow!” S...

Triceps gym day

Image
Today’s gym focus was triceps. I started off with rowing machine not the record today just a nice steady pace.  It was on to the tri machine to start and starting heavier today at 50kg and going up to 73kg it was a good start.  On to the cable next and as the bar was fitted that’s where I started. 15kg to start and working up to 33.5kg it was a struggle to finish.  Over head pulls next and starting at 20kg and going up to 28kg not as heavy.  Normal rope pull downs next and again starting at 20kg and going up to 33kg  On to the bars next and 20kg to get the motion and moving up to 30kg as a working set !  Chest press to finish and starting with 20 kg and topping out at 35kg to failure.  It was a good session and it was nice to be back training after a rest yesterday ! Have fun stay safe 👍🏼

The Crying Game Forest Whitaker, Stephen Rea

Image
In 1992 I was only 11 years old it was late summer and I think we were on our summer holiday there was lots of buzz about a new film being launched every time we got in the car there was an interview with one of the stars and the DJ couldn’t stop raving about this film. He would play the Boy George track that accompanies the film at least twice an hour those haunting lyrics must have stayed with me the whole week.  Obviously I was too young to watch the film so I’m going to revisit it now.  Just a little point of reference Forest Whitaker as brilliant as he is, actually overweight for a British soldier. British soldiers are regularly beasted and made to train hard and have a high level of fitness.  The film  Jody (Whitaker) a British soldier is lured into an IRA honey trap and held captive in the hope of exchanging him for a captured IRA operative. During his time in captivity he starts to build report with one of his captures Fergus (Stephen Rea). While headi...

Rest and recovery

Image
After training consistently for a few days now it’s time for some rest and recovery.  Yesterday I wasn’t pushing as hard as I normally do so I’m going to have this afternoon for some rest.  Tomorrow I’ll be back at the gym. Have fun stay safe 👍🏼

Leg day

Image
It’s a return to the gym today and cross trainer to start intervals on 15 and a good 30 min warm up. Then it was on to legs and squats to start, after a cycle yesterday and coming at the end of a training cycle I didn’t want to push to hard so started at 50kg and worked up to 80kg a little bit less today but I wasn’t confident my knees would take it.  Leg extensions next and starting at 50kg and rising to 65kg a level below my normal finish.  Leg press next and starting with 50kg which was way to light I upped it to 70kg and then finished on 100kg.  Back over to leg curls and I tried to mirror the extensions with this one. Finally calf raise standing starting at 50kg and upping it to 70 gradually. They’d it for today’s training, not sure on having a recovery day tomorrow. Let’s see.  Have fun stay safe 👍🏼

Limited Edition Dr Pepper Cherry Crush

Image
Dr Pepper  Cherry Crush Another new product on supermarket shelves but in the soft drink section this time the limited edition Dr pepper cherry crush.  Firstly it’s a very strong cherry taste, I thought it would be like cherry cola where there would be a subtle taste but no it’s like getting a big cherry hit with a little after taste of Dr Pepper. It’s nice but very strong and with the cherry sweetness almost overpowering and could take some getting used to for some !  It’s is sugar free and the can itself has some great art work on it that makes it stand out.  Have fun stay safe !
