The secret race, Tyler Hamilton and Daniel Coyle
In the early nineties the average speed in the Tour de France was 28kph by the late nineties that had risen to 35kph, what caused that shift, better training, lighter equipment or new training regimes. Well all those things made small margins but the truth was a sport that had been surrounded by drugs and cheating had found a new edge in cheating and taking performance enhancing drug that could raise performance by 20% that was the hormone EPO . Where there downsides, yes blood so thick you could die in your sleep a ban from the sport or criminal conviction if found in France. It didn’t deter professional cyclists and if you look at the records most of the names have been struck because of drug use.
Tyler Hamilton was a trusted lieutenant of Lance Armstrong at his peak and in this book he takes you behind the scenes as the USPostal team comes to dominate the Tour de France. The ways in which they used drugs and how they beat the system of drug tests and scrutiny.
A really well written book and Tyler’s charisma shines through the pages, he’s the all American star who pulls you through the secret dark world. If you’re interested in cycling or sport it’s a good read and being an older book it’s a bargain on Amazon.
