Berlin, The story of the city. Barney White Spunner.
Berlin if you've never been, it's a unique city when you visit most places you're an outsider a tourist, a foreigner, not in Berlin! In Berlin you are a Berliner.
There's the story of a civil servant who's just moved to Berlin in the book. It's his first day and he receives a questionare on a city improvement. Having experience in other German citys he knows it took 2 years before he could have an option in Frankfurt and 18 months before he could have one in Colone, so he skips the survey. 5 minutes later he receives a phone call. ‘You didn't answer the questinare?’ ‘well I'm new so I thought’ he was cut of ‘well you have opinions don't you? Fill out the questonare !’
That's Berlin she embraces you and takes you in, of course most of it was destroyed by the allied airforces during World War 2 and then pillaged by the soviet army after defeat. The irony being that Berlin didn't even vote the NAZI party into power.
The author takes the story of the city from its earliest settlements right up to the present day. It's a very interesting book and for a subject that could become heavy it's rather light and bounces along. If you have an interest in the city then you'll find this a good read.
