Paris After The Liberation 1944-1949, Antony Beevor, Artemis Cooper

In July 1940 Paris was occupied, the once free city renowned for its liberty and egalaty was under the boot. The population faced some difficult choices that would impact the rest of their lives. Should they continue as normal, should they aid the occupation or should the resist?

The choices made during the occupation would have consequences on and after the city’s liberation in August 1944. Those who had an easier time and fraternized and aided with the occupation would be singled out and. The members of the marquee who actively resisted the occupation try to leverage their political status to gain power and influence. With communist resistance volunteers now seeking to gain a political foothold there are tricky political issues to navigate.

Antony Beevor is of course is a genius putting the reader in the middle of the action, if it's a fine Parisian hotel or the rougher parts of Paris you feel as if your actually there experiencing the events as they unfold. With a collection of narratives being woven expertly into a larger story you'll be itching to see what happens next.

It's always gripping reading about history and hearing about the events spiraled from one to another, it's also interesting to have a idea of just how different things could have been if only for small margins.

Well worth a look, also look at Berlin by the author as its also compelling reading.
