The Secret History Of Flight 149, Stephen Davis
At the beginning in August 1990 Iraq was building up forces on its boarder with Kuwait and peace talks between the two nations were at loggerheads, to every intelligence agency it was a matter of when and how far and not if there would be an invasion.
Knowing all this there remains a key questions why does the United Kingdom government let a flight from its flag carrier British Airways land at Kuwait airport ? Why were 250 passengers handed straight to the Iraqi regime to be used as human shields in the up coming conflict? Finally what was life like for the passengers and other expatriates in Kuwait in the days following the invasion ?
Stephen Davis explores all of this in his book, interviews with over 300 people unveiling the reason why so many were put at risk. This book is a brilliant investigation into that incident and it puts you the reader in forefront as events unfold. The tensions are real as the invaders pillage Kuwait of all its riches.
I’d seen this book on the shelves when it was launched, it’s funny how the mind works, I can remember being a 9 year old watching the build up to war. Of course being 9 years old and the news outlets constantly playing B roll of fighter jets over the desert I was drawn in. I sat and watched as the hostages were sitting with Saddam Hussein as he tries to convince everyone he’s a peaceful man of the people.
If like me you watched as a child an wondered how the little blonde boy was put in a position where he was forced to sit with a tyrant then you’ll have to pick up a copy of this book. It’s a well written and researched book that reveals the truth behind BA149 and the reason so many were put in harms way !
