Bonfire Of The Vanities, Tom Wolff

The 1980’s were a hedonistic decade defined by money, power and As Gordon Gekko (Wall Street) would say greed. Tom Wolff’s serial first appeared in Rolling Stone magazine and ran for 27 instalments, these would latter be released as a novel of the same name. It’s been called the book the defines a decade and having finished it I would have to agree.

Set in New York a wealthy stock broker is out with his heiress mistress in the wrong part of town ( the Bronx) when there’s an attempt car jacking. Speeding away from the scene the driver serious injuries the young black male who attempted the car jacking and attempts to forget about the incident hoping it will go away.

A corrupt politician, a journalist seeking fame and a group of lawyers all as slippery as the next turn this book into a great crime thriller. You’ll love, hate and pity the characters as this 80’s tragedy unfolds.

Of course I’m a third rate writer who could only dream of having a tenth of the success of the author Tom Wolff but I feel it my duty to point out some considerations to and perspective reader. This book was taken from a highly successful serial from a popular magazine so there is a sense of getting payed by the world, it’s well written but every colour has been used to paint the picture and can bog the story down a tad. Sometimes it’s galloping along but then it’s a crawl.

The story is well written and a moral lesson to us all, the characters are rich and vibrant and leap off the page and grab you. The twists and turns were I’m sure the talk of the readership and will keep you guessing but in the modern work where this book has been aped so much it’s looking historical. Indeed as I write the famous P Diddy is in court and finding himself in a difficult position, as have so many celebrities before.

If you want to look at a nostalgic era in this case the 80’s buy this book and reveal in the Savile Rowe suits and high cheek bones that were. Tom Wolff has a catalog of great works and if it’s the author you wish to study I would recommend a work that started out as a book as they are slick and well written.
