Star Trek, Section 31

Deep space nine was the first Star Trek series to come after the passing of Gene Roddenberry the iconic writer and producer who held court over the Star Trek franchise. As a result of this the series had the luxury to explore darker themes that might have gone against the original writers conservative values. One of these was the dark shadowy world of intelligence and counter intelligence for Starfleet in the form of Section 31. In one episode they recruit Julian Bashir  (The Doctor ) for an undercover assignment against the Romulans.

Deep space nine also had a story line that there was an alternative universe where humans were enslaved and used as forced labour, until there was an uprising and then could break free to start the Terran empire and be on a par with its peers.

This the latest Star Trek movie pulls on both of those plots to twist into its story line. A section 31 team ( think mission impossible ) have to recover a dangerous item deep behind a frontier. The initial plan fails and then it turns into a recovery movie. Omari Hardwick (Ghost from power) heads up the team of misfits as they travel across the quadrant trying to recover the device. Expect the normal Star Trek high jinx with great music and direction. I wouldn’t recommend this as an introduction to the Star Trek universe as some understanding of Star Trek will go a long way.

If you’re into Star Trek then give it a go it’s an okay heist movie, if you’re not really a Star Trek fan then there are much better movies in this genre and I’d recommend you look for one of those !
