Mickey 17, Bong Joon Ho, Robert Patterson, Naomi Ackie
It’s the first film I’ve seen from Bong Joon Ho and it’s his first since receiving an Oscar for best director and best film in 2019.
Robert Patterson has come a long way since Twilight in what feels like an age ago. The director kept him on his toes by asking for different types of performance just before a take which helped the performer deliver that confused appearance. All the performances are good, Mark Ruffalo as the over the top politician in a Trump Vein brings a smile especially with his ignorance and bombastic ideas.
The film
Mickey needs to leave earth after borrowing money for a macaron business that flopped, the loan shark he’s borrowed from has some nasty ideas of repayment. The only way off planet is to sign on as an expendable on a colonisation ship being led by a failed politician. An expendable is used for dangerous jobs and experiments until they die and are then cloned back into existence having their memory’s reprogrammed into their brain.
The ship lands on a plant and Mickey is used to gather data, on one mission he runs into a group on giant woodlice who save him from death. Due to some stupid idea from the politician two of these get on board the ship one is killed and the other almost killed while the rest of the Woodlice how the ship to ransom. Mickey saves the day and negotiates a deal with the woodlice and a society developed and humans and woodlice live together in harmony.
It’s an ok film and if you like Bong Joon Ho then it’s worth a look. I’ll have to take some time to look at his other projects. It’s a good ecological type film that gets a discussion going after, the cast is strong and the story is good but I just want a little bit more it’s missing something, I don’t know what though !
Give it a look Robert Patterson is good as are Mark Ruffalo and Naomi Ackie.
