Vietnam Rough Riders, Frank McAdams
Another Vietnam war book to review and a little bit later in the conflict this one as it starts in early 1969 with an introduction explaining how he arrived as a lieutenant in the conflict zone.
Concentrating on the supply convoys and detailing their activities and what it was like to be in one and in command of a convoy it’s a different aspect to the Vietnam war that hasn’t has had much published about it. From the point of soldiers who were sent out on patrol those on supply runs were having an easy time of it. The books explores the dangers that were faced and how it felt to be on the front lines after the war and swung against the United States post Tet offensive.
Frank McAdams went back to University after the war and this book is based on his work towards his degree. Coming home from an unpopular war and being able to write about it at University after such a short time is a testament to the author. The work is completely open and celebrates his mistakes as well as his triumphs. It’s not a well known area of the conflict and it’s worth a read.
