The Substance, Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley, Dennis Quaid

Coralie Fargeat’s last film Revenge was a feminist master piece forget the IMDb star rating it’s absolutely top draw so her follow up film had big boots to fill !

Before I get into this film which is about aesthetics I should point out that I am old and overweight and Demi Moore who is nearly 20 years older than me looks brilliant and much better than me on her bad day !

A surrealist look at Hollywood and the way it treats or hopefully used to treat its female stars. Dennis Quaid as the over the top producer Harvey really grabs you out of the blocks and lays the foundation for what’s coming, Demi Moore plays Elisabeth an aging former Oscar winner who now has a keep fit segment on national tv, Harvey the producer wants a younger fitter replacement and fires her on her birthday. On the way home from the studio she notices her billboard being replaced and ends up in a car crash. While being treated she’s handed a USB drive that advertises ‘The substance’ you take it and for one week you have a young body then the next you must revert to your old body. Of course things arnt always that easy and when you have a nice young body you won’t rush to the old.

It really exposes Hollywoods need for a younger more glamorous female stars while older female film stars get overlooked for roles and ironically for this film awards too. If we’re climbing on this pedestal I would be remiss if I didn’t point out the oversight of Female directors and their contribution to cinema too. Other industries are working hard to combat this and the film industry should be no different.

This film is up for a number of different awards, I think it’s best hope will be Actress in a leading role. Demi Moore is good and she’s giving a measured performance I know it shouldn’t be a consideration but with nearly 30 years in the business that has to count for something too.

It’s a good watch and  good journey, there’s some good acting from some great performers. Yes there’s a feminist message but it’s not rammed down your throat. Of course like all fables there’s a moral here to be careful what you wish for as things come at a price !

Have fun stay safe, yes it’s a long blog today thank you for reading ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ
