The Apprentice

Another entry in my Oscar nominated films The Apprentice was announced in 2018 but struggled until Abbasi, Stan and Strong joined the project in 2023. Receiving an 8 minute standing ovation at the 2024 Cannes film festival and huge media attention the controversy of the subject ment it struggled to find a U.S distributor. Despite legal challenges Briarcliff Entertainment bought the rights and released it in October 2024.

Focusing on Donald Trumps early business career, a young Donald Trump turns to Roy Cohn a contentious lawyer in New York with hard reputation to fight a race discrimination case against his father Fred Trump. Cohn manages to blackmail the lead prosecutor and make the case collapse. Trump falls further into Cohns orbit and sees him as a mentor. Trump’s develops the Tump tower and starts to belittle Cohns achievements and the wedge is increased between the two former ally’s. Trump meets the beautiful Czech model Ivana Zelinฤkovรก and pursues her until the eventually wed. Ivana becomes and influential part of the Trump organisation and resentment grows from her now husband.

Cohn develops AIDS but denies it publicly his lover also develops advanced AIDS symptoms and Trump is persuaded to house him in the Hyatt hotel owned by Trump. The lover is evicted after complaints and the relationship between Chon and Trump slides further apart. Cohn confronts Trump in the street and Trump ends up taking him to Florida to celebrate his birthday. Cohn receives some diamond cuff links as a present but is latter informed they are worthless and he breaks down and excuses himself.

Cohn dies in1986 and Trump goes on to have liposuction and scalp-reduction surgeries and meets a ghost writer who pens his autobiography The Art of The Deal using Cohns three rules of business as his own.

Not a flattering film for Donald Trump and no surprise that he tried to have it suppressed. It’s really well written and the actors completely draw you into the mindsets of their characters. The direction makes the film flow and keeps you engaged. But with Trump in the White House and the film industry struggling I can’t see any traction at the Oscars, it would be political suicide for the academy.
