Black box diaries

I’m duty bound to repeat the warning at the start of this documentary, this documentary investigates a sexual assault and as such may contain triggers for people if this applies to you prepare yourself and think about measures you can take to isolate yourself from them!

A young female journalist Shiori is lead through a hotel lobby protesting and tries to get away from her companion she is subsequently sexually assaulted. Latter reported to the police and despite the CCTV footage and eye witnesses there is deemed to be insufficient evidence for the case to proceed. Shiori is forced to take her case to the civil court and lays out a landmark case in Japans outdated legal system.

Firstly I want to say how brave it was for Shiori to make this documentary and take the step of sharing it with the world. In a culture that values privacy it must have been incredibly difficult.

This film is nominated in the documentary category, it should win, it’s very powerful but I think it’s too controversial for the academy to award an Oscar. I am pleased that it’s getting the recognition it deserves and the publicity that will hopefully lead to the change of laws and better safety for Japanese women.

Stay safe šŸ‘šŸ¼
