A Real Pain

With two nominations, one for supporting actor Kieran Culkin and best director Jesse Eisenberg I’ll be looking at A Real Pain.

Written and directed by Jesse Eisenberg the is an odd couple comedy. Two cousins head out to visit their ancestral homeland in honour of their late grandmother. Of course their personality types are completely different one a reserved thoughtful type and the other louder more aggressive.

It’s Jeese Eisenberg’s second project in which he’s take directorial lead and it’s ok. When you compare it to the films in this category it’s probably an outsider at best. The movies best hope of an Oscar is with Culkin as he delivers a great performance as the reserved and thoughtful Benji.

Culkin’s performance is good and does propel the film along and as the viewer you do empathise with him and find David his juxtaposition irritating at times.

There are better road trip movies for sure, if you’re a fan of Jesse Eisenberg then you’ll enjoy this film if like me you find he can start to grate a bit then probably best avoided.
