Virgina Cowles, The Phantom Major. The original S.A.S book
I was twelve years old when Andy Mcnab’s Bravo Two Zero came out and the S.A.S book culture truly took off. There are so many now I’m betting if you walk in to your local charity shop you could find 3-4 different ones.
The phantom major was published a year before McNab was born in 1958 so it must be the original S.A.S book. It outlines the creation of the S.A.S from a hospital bed and all the development of the early operations. It’s written in slightly older style which makes it a little different to all the other books.
If you’ve never read a book on the S.A.S it’s well worth a look as there are some funny as well as tragic moments. If you are a veteran of the S.A.S in media then you should vist the original and see what everyone else based their books on when it comes to the early years of the S.A.S
